Leeds - The right choice

Globally renowned for our teaching and research, the courses draw upon the immense resources of one of the largest integrated engineering schools in Europe. Where cutting-edge, world class research brings the frontiers of science to you along with the opportunity of learning to fly and gaining a private pilot's licence (PPL).

We draw on our extensive expertise in design, materials, propulsion, environmental issues and industrial management, coupled with the pilot training facilities and the expertise of a professional Flying School. Our degree course in Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies will equip you with a solid science and engineering base and broader aviation knowledge vital for pilots in the 21st century.

However, if you would like to develop these specialist engineering and technical skills but do not wish to take the flight training component, or indeed for those who have already studied for their PPL or are making alternative arrangements for this, then our Aviation Technology and Management degree course is the perfect choice for you.

Our degree course in Aviation Technology and Management will equip you with the skills required for careers in management and operations in the aviation industries, and will enhance your employability and credentials if you are currently holding the PPL.

On both courses you will benefit from specialist input into the curriculum, through the involvement of professional pilots and senior managers from the aviation industry. By bringing working knowledge of advanced communications and navigation systems, management techniques and strategic thinking, they complement the knowledge base that these courses provide you.

Impressive credentials

The School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering, which is home to the Aviation Technology courses, is number 3 in the UK for general engineering, after Cambridge and Oxford (in the Government's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise); an impressive 80% of research activity is rated internationally excellent or world leading.

Our active research environment is vital in achieving the highest calibre tuition in the field. The University of Leeds is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research intensive UK universities and is globally renowned for the quality of teaching and research.

Specialist facilities for Aviation students, including engine laboratories and a state-of-the-art Merlin Flight Simulator. This single seat capsule on a six-axis hydraulic motion system, with visual and HUD displays, and active control systems is also able to function as an FNTP1 simulator and is CAA certified for use in flight training.

You'll also enjoy excellent teaching facilities and resources, with modern, well-equipped lecture theatres and laboratories.

Our internationally-renowned library is one of the largest in the country offering you access to over 2.8 million items including electronic resources to assist with your studies.

A multi million pound investment in our sport facilities means you will benefit from a greater range of activities including a state-of-the-art swimming pool and fitness suite boasting over 200 machines and a health suite.
