Post Graduate Degree

MSc Aeronautical Engineering

This new MSc Aeronautical Engineering programme is ideal for graduates seeking employment in the aeronautical sector and for practising engineers from the aerospace industries who wish to extend and update their skills. The award is designed as a progression from undergraduate studies. You will have access to state-of-the-art engineering analysis software. An important aspect for employment of postgraduate engineers is the progression to management, so these skills are developed within the award. Teaching Facilities

Our new state-of-the-art Merlin MP521 engineering flight simulator will enable you to take to the skies and put all your theory into practice. Get ready to experience a realistic navigation simulation experience like never before! This exciting facility has a modern flight software and motion system, which gives you a realistic and accurate flying experience. You will be able to make changes to the aircraft's geometry and flight characteristics, and assess how this affects handling quality and stability. Flying is simulated through a screen in the cockpit with visual reference to the horizon in normal flight and to the runway during take-off and landing.

Our facilities are extensive, including a fully equipped wind tunnel for the study of aerodynamics, a thermo-fluid laboratory with an educational Gas Turbine Engine unit, a range of equipment for materials testing and analysis, and also a well equipped instrumentation and control laboratory. In addition, we have state of the art computer suites installed with the latest commercially available finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics software.

We are going one step further and building an aircraft hangar on campus for our very own commercial jet. This equates to a further £1million investment for our aeronautical students. With demand growing for our BSc Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and BEng Aeronautical Engineering courses students will have access to even more hands-on training with an actual aircraft, helping you progress towards a dynamic career in the aviation industry. For those studying aircraft maintenance, this additional practical time with the aircraft will be vital in achieving your EASA Part-66 License (European Aviation Safety Agency)*.

*Subject to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approval.

Research

The University of Glamorgan has achieved excellent results in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), confirming its status as one of Wales' research active universities. More than seventy per cent of Glamorgan's research activity was assessed as being of a quality recognised internationally for its originality, significance and rigour.
