The University

The University of Liverpool is a world leading research university. Its history dates back to 1881 and the establishment of University College Liverpool. We are a member of the Russell Group which brings together the top 20 research universities in the UK.

We aim to help our students to develop the skills and understanding that will allow them to build a successful career. A range of teaching methods are used including problem-based-learning, traditional lectures, laboratories, modern computer simulations, design-build-test exercises and individual projects. Our aim is that each module will have a significant amount of active learning. The main aerospace topics of aerodynamics, flight dynamics, avionics, aerostructures and materials are all taught by staff who undertake leading research in their field. A design project later in the degree provides experience in integrating these topics into a flying prototype. Teaching at Liverpool is supported by the newly built active learning laboratory, which provides customisable space for team and individual projects, and the several moving and fixed base flight simulators, wind tunnels and high performance computer clusters.

Undergraduate degrees

Our emphasis on active learning throughout our taught programmes is captured in our 'Liverpool Engineer' moto, 'To simulate the active learning of sound engineering principles and practices within an environment which fosters creativity, innovation and professionalism' The Liverpool Engineer is a phrase intended to encapsulate the special nature of a graduate from any of the programmes offered by the Department of Engineering - an engineering education distinctive in the way students engage activity, through design and make, with their learning process. The Liverpool Engineer Degree Programmes promote the development of a holistic, systems approach to engineering where technical knowledge and skills are complemented by a sound appreciation of the life-cycle processes involved in engineering and an awareness of the ethical, safety, environmental, economic and social considerations involved in practicing as a professional engineer.

Teaching facilities

Engineering plays a crucial part in the UK's economy, and the production of competent, bright and imaginative engineers is an important role for any university engineering department. The University of Liverpool is taking a lead in producing the next generation of high-calibre graduate engineers with an ambitious and innovative programme: The Liverpool Engineer. The initiative is timely; the Royal Academy of Engineering has just produced an authoritative report detailing the skills needed by 21st Century engineering graduates which makes it clear that traditional methods for teaching engineers do not meet modern demands within the industry. This is precisely the conclusion drawn by the University's Department of Engineering that has led to the Liverpool Engineer concept (http://www.liv.ac.uk/news/features/liverpool-engineers.htm).

Our new buildings include refurbished laboratories and research space for our eight research groups, a new Street which provides access to all areas and also student social space, and our innovative Active Learning Labs in which 250 students at a time can engage in team and project work, for example design, build and test exercise. This is probably the biggest unencumbered active learning space for engineering students anywhere in the world (http://www.liv.ac.uk/erp/index.htm).

Research

Research in the Department of Engineering is undertaken in all aspects of the Aerospace discipline. The Department has excellent research facilities including parallel computer clusters for CFD and FEA analysis, fixed and moving base flight simulators as well as several wind tunnels. All staff are research active and their research is renownd in the UK and abroad. The RAE 2008 ranked 75% of the research outputs in the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering as internationally leading or excellent.

The research pages of the Engineering Department provide an overview of current research projects undertaken at Liverpool (http://www.liv.ac.uk/info/researchdept/eg).
