Research
Proposals for original aviation related research are welcomed by the university. Please contact Paul Hogan for further details.
London Metropolitan University has been at the forefront of developing higher education courses for the Aviation industry. Our BSc Aviation Management course was originally set up at the request of the airline industry with a remit to provide them with graduates with specialized knowledge of how the industry operates. We now specialise in all aspects of the Management of Airlines and Airports and our students are amongst some of the most well regarded within the industry. Our graduate placement record is one of the best in the country with students obtaining excellent positions with a variety of airlines, airports and associated aerospace companies. We are also continuing to expand our cooperative programmes with leading aviation institutions in both Europe and the USA.
Our dedicated team of teaching staff has extensive experience and covers a wide spectrum of aviation requirements. With former RAF aircrew in charge of the 'hands on' ATPL programme and specialists drawn from airlines and industry we were the first UK University to offer a BSc degree in Aviation Management. Since then our courses have evolved to include Foundation, FDSc and Post Graduate, MSc courses in Aviation and now we are able to offer three new degrees which reflect the needs of the Aviation and Aerospace industry as a whole. Teaching is carried out at our Moorgate and Jewry Street campus, two sites set right in the very heart of London, the aviation cross roads of the world.
We are also the only UK University to offer a full programme of 'behind the scenes' visits to airports and aircraft manufacturers in Europe and America. First year students have the opportunity to visit the Headquarters of KLM, Schipol Airport and also Airbus in Toulouse to see the giant A380 production line. Meanwhile, our second and third year students are able to experience private dedicated tours of Boeing in Seattle, Gulfstream in Savannah and NASA in San Francisco with talks hosted by their senior management officials. In addition, both Southwest and American Airlines provide students with unprecedented access to their operational and maintenance centres.
Students who wish to obtain their PPL prior to commencing their ATPL training can do so either here in the UK or with NMC Aviation, our partner college in America. This unique American connection means that our students can learn to fly during the summer months in the picturesque setting of Traverse City on Lake Michigan in modern 'glass cockpit' aircraft. On completion of the PPL students can then progress onto the ATPL course which leads to a commercial pilots licence.
